Your Silicon Valley Weekend, August 7–9: Jazz Takes Over Downtown San Jose

This is the biggest music weekend of the Silicon Valley summer. The San Jose Jazz Summer Fest fills downtown with more than 100 performances across eight stages Friday through Sunday, ZZ Top and Cheap Trick play the Saratoga hillside Saturday, and Santana comes home to Shoreline with The Doobie Brothers on Sunday. San Jose: Summer Fest Takes the Plaza

The San Jose Jazz Summer Fest runs Friday, August 7 through Sunday, August 9 in and around Plaza de Cesar Chavez, and this year’s edition is a heavyweight: Patti LaBelle headlines, joined by Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue, Cory Wong, Zapp featuring Tuxedo, the Afro-Cuban All Stars, and The Soul Rebels — over 100 performances on eight stages spread through downtown. The genius of Summer Fest has always been the wandering: brass band on one block, salsa dancing on the next, a late-night jam two streets over. Grab a weekend pass, pick a home stage, and let the rest of it happen to you. It is the one weekend a year downtown San Jose feels like New Orleans with better weather.

Saratoga: Texas Comes to the Hillside

The Mountain Winery counters with two big nights of its own: Saturday, ZZ Top with Cheap Trick at 7:30 PM — that sharp-dressed double bill alone justifies the drive up Pierce Road — and Sunday, George Thorogood & The Destroyers at 7:30 PM. The formula does not change: dinner in the Village on Big Basin Way, then the five-minute climb to the amphitheater as the Valley lights come on below. Mountain View: Santana Comes Home

Sunday night at Shoreline Amphitheatre is the sentimental headliner of the weekend: Santana & The Doobie Brothers bring the Oneness Tour to Mountain View, Sunday at 7 PM, doors at 6. Carlos Santana playing twenty minutes from the San Jose neighborhoods where he got his start — with the Doobies, another Bay Area institution, sharing the bill — is about as hometown as a stadium-scale show gets. Lawn seats, warm August evening, two catalogs everybody knows by heart.

Los Gatos: Free Americana on the Lawn

Music in the Park continues Sunday 5–7 PM on the Civic Center lawn with Lindsay and the Cheeks, a five-piece Americana act voted Lake Tahoe’s Best Band two years running — free, blankets welcome, the town’s living room doing what it does best. Pair it with the Town Plaza farmers’ market Sunday morning, 9 AM–1 PM, and a long patio afternoon on N. Santa Cruz Avenue in between. (New to town and curious which pocket of Los Gatos fits? Campbell: Market Sunday, As Always

Campbell’s Downtown Farmers’ Market fills E. Campbell Avenue Sunday 9 AM–1 PM — early August is heirloom tomato season, and the downtown patios are made for a post-market brunch. One Perfect Sunday

Campbell market at 9. Patio brunch downtown. An afternoon set at Summer Fest in San Jose — Sunday passes are the value play — then either a blanket on the Los Gatos lawn at 5 for Lindsay and the Cheeks, or the drive to Shoreline for Santana at 7. You cannot do it all. That is the point of living here in August: the problem is choosing.
