Your Silicon Valley Weekend: April 17–19 — Earth Day Events, Hiking & Spring Markets

Celebrate Earth Day this weekend with us! From scenic spring hikes to farmers’ markets and sustainable living events, Silicon Valley has something special planned. Here’s your guide to making the most of the perfect April weather.

There’s something magical about Silicon Valley in mid-April. The winter rains have transformed our hills into lush green hillsides, wildflowers are in full bloom, and the weather is absolutely perfect for outdoor adventures. This weekend, April 17–19, Earth Day celebrations are in full swing across the Bay Area, and we’ve put together our favorite activities for every type of Silicon Valley resident.

Whether you’re a serious hiker, farmers’ market enthusiast, or someone who just wants to celebrate sustainable living, there’s plenty to explore. Many communities are holding early Earth Day events this weekend, with the official date falling on Tuesday, April 22. Let’s dive into the best ways to spend these three beautiful days in the valley we call home.

Spring Hiking: Silicon Valley’s Best Trails

April is prime hiking season in Silicon Valley. The weather is cool enough for comfortable morning and afternoon treks, wildflowers are blooming, and the views are stunning. Here are three must-do trails for this weekend:

Mt Umunhum trail in South San Jose — Silicon Valley spring hiking with green hills and clear skies

Rancho San Antonio Open Space Preserve — Cupertino

Just minutes from central Silicon Valley, Rancho San Antonio offers some of our favorite spring hikes. The Main Trail Loop is moderate (about 5 miles) and takes you through grasslands with stunning Cupertino views. This weekend, expect to see lupine and California poppies in full bloom. The trail is well-maintained and perfect for families. Parking is free; arrive early Saturday or Sunday to secure a spot. Trail tip: Start early (before 9 AM) to avoid crowds and get the best light for photos.

Castle Rock State Park — Los Gatos

For experienced hikers, Castle Rock offers a more challenging experience with incredible rewards. The Castle Rock Trail (5 miles round trip, 1,200 feet elevation gain) takes you through redwood groves and oak woodlands to a summit with 360-degree views of the Santa Cruz Mountains. The effort is worth every step. This weekend, the wildflower display along the upper sections should be spectacular. Note: The road up is narrow and parking fills quickly on weekends.

Alum Rock Park — San Jose

Alum Rock is a Silicon Valley treasure. The Penitencia Creek Trail (2.5 miles, easy) is perfect for all fitness levels and takes you past creek crossings and native vegetation. The park is home to rare geological formations and beautiful canyon views. This weekend, watch for mountain birds returning for spring. The park has excellent facilities, and there’s an entrance fee of $6 per vehicle.

Earth Day Celebrations Across Silicon Valley

Many of our favorite Silicon Valley communities are hosting Earth Day events this weekend. Here’s where to look:

San Jose’s Environmental Festival

Saturday April 17, Kelley Park. Sustainable living vendors, local environmental organizations, kids’ activities, and live music celebrating Earth Day. Free admission. Arrive early for best parking; consider taking VTA light rail if you’re in San Jose proper.

Los Gatos Community Cleanup

Sunday April 18, Los Gatos Creek Trail. Help restore native habitats while enjoying a guided walk with local naturalists. Tools provided; register online. A great way to give back to the community you call home while enjoying the trails.

Mountain View Farmers Market Spring Edition

Saturday mornings through May, downtown Mountain View. Over 75 local farmers and artisans. This weekend features Earth Day specials and sustainable product vendors. Perfect for picking up fresh spring produce and local honey.

Campbell Community Earth Day Festival

Saturday April 17, downtown Campbell. Local restaurants, sustainable fashion vendors, music, and family activities. The Campbell Farmers Market is also happening, so you can make a full day of exploring downtown.

Farmers Markets: Spring Fresh Finds

Fresh seasonal produce stall at a Silicon Valley farmers market

April is when Silicon Valley farmers markets explode with spring vegetables and fresh berries. Here are the best ones this weekend:

San Jose Farmers Market (Saturday mornings, San Pedro Square) features local produce, prepared foods, and flowers. The market has expanded for spring, with over 100 vendors. Arrive by 9 AM for the best selection. Our favorites: fresh strawberries from local farms, spring greens, and artisanal breads.

Los Gatos Farmers Market (Saturday mornings, downtown Los Gatos) is a beloved community institution. The market is closed-loop—every vendor is within 100 miles of Los Gatos—making it the most sustainable option in Silicon Valley. This weekend, expect fresh asparagus, spring herbs, and local-made goods.

Sunnyvale Farmers Market (Sunnyvale Community Center, Saturday mornings) focuses on organic producers and local artisans. Earth Day weekend specials make this a great time to support sustainable local agriculture.

Saratoga Farmers Market (Saturdays at the Saratoga Train Station) is intimate and charming, with many familiar faces. Spring produce is at its peak, and the Saturday morning experience is quintessential Silicon Valley.

Outdoor Dining & Spring Activities

Take your Earth Day celebration to the table. Many Silicon Valley restaurants are featuring Earth Day menus this weekend, with locally-sourced ingredients and sustainable seafood options. Santana Row in San Jose has patios perfect for spring dining, and many Mountain View restaurants offer outdoor seating with gardens.

Historic Downtown Los Gatos — outdoor dining streetscape

Consider a bike ride along the Bay Trail (San Bruno Mountain offers incredible spring views), a picnic lunch at Vasona Lake County Park in Los Gatos, or an evening stroll through a neighborhood park in your community. The whole point of Earth Day is appreciating the natural world around us—and Silicon Valley’s natural beauty is second to none.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the best time to visit Rancho San Antonio this weekend?

Arrive before 9 AM Saturday or Sunday for parking. The main lot fills by 10 AM on nice spring days. Early morning is also best for photography, with softer light and fewer crowds.

Are there kid-friendly activities for Earth Day weekend?

Absolutely! Most of the farmers markets have activities for children, and Alum Rock Park offers easy trails perfect for families. The San Jose Environmental Festival (Kelley Park) has dedicated kids’ activities all day Saturday.

Can I bring my dog on these trails?

Dogs are allowed on most Bay Area trails but must be leashed. Rancho San Antonio and Alum Rock both allow dogs. Castle Rock allows them on some sections but not others—check ahead. Always carry water for your pup!

What should I wear for spring hiking in Silicon Valley?

Layers are key. Mornings are cool (50–60°F), but afternoons warm up quickly (70s). Wear moisture-wicking layers, bring sunscreen, and wear good hiking shoes. A light rain jacket is a good idea—April can bring surprise showers.
